How I Teach: Rigor and Joy
At See-level Learners, I believe every student deserves the tools to express themselves with clarity and confidence. Writing isn’t just about creativity—it’s about communication. Before students can explore ideas freely, they need a strong foundation in grammar, sentences, paragraphs, and structure. Once those tools are in place, creativity flows more easily and with less frustration.

Why “See-level”?
It’s a pun! I live on an island in the middle of the San Francisco Bay. But more importantly, in our tutoring and class work we focus on collaboration, cooperation, and compassion—learning to put ourselves in other people’s shoes so we can see eye-to-eye.
Rigor and Joy
- Rigor: I teach explicit writing skills—sentences, paragraphs, thesis statements—so students can communicate clearly and effectively. My classes are structured, content-rich, and built around high expectations that help students grow.
- Joy: Classes are warm, engaging, and often playful. With younger learners I sing, chant, and rhyme to make skills memorable. With older learners I encourage lively discussion, curiosity, and a supportive classroom community.
Together, rigor and joy make learning stick. Students leave class not only knowing how to write, but also enjoying the process.
What I Believe
- Skills First, Creativity Follows
Creativity matters, but it flourishes best on top of a strong foundation. I prioritize explicit instruction so students have the stamina and the tools they need to express their ideas clearly. - Universal and Nonpartisan
My classes are deliberately nonpartisan and non-activist. I focus on solid skills that prepare all students to think clearly, study effectively, grow as professionals, and participate thoughtfully in society. - Community Learning
Students learn by doing, together. They come ready to learn, practice respect, and discover that real growth happens when rigor and joy meet in community.
What This Means for Your Child
When your child joins a See-level Learners class, you can expect:
- Direct instruction in writing and speaking skills (not just “OK, go express yourself!”)
- Visible growth from grammar → sentences → paragraphs → essays
- A nonpartisan space that is welcoming to everyone and free of political or activist leanings in any direction. (My aim as a teacher is that my students have no idea of my personal opinions on politics, religion, or public figures. Such things are your purview as a parent, and have nothing to do with the skills I am teaching.)
- Respectful, supportive community learning (wherein kids learn to be civil speakers and listeners)
- The real confidence that comes from mastering skills in an environment of warmth and high expectation, or as I like to think of it: rigor and joy
